Fundació Tàpies opens first exhibition in Spain of Maria Lassnig

Rather than painting with her body, Maria Lassnig (1919-2014) painted from her body and its sensations. This is the premise underlying just about all of the artist's long career, which features in an exhibition opening today at the Fundació Tàpies in Barcelona. It is the first retrospective of the Austrian artist to take place in Spain, where she is little known despite her international profile. From the same generation as Tàpies, Lassnig shares his obsession with the human body, albeit with very different results. Her work is marked by fragmented visions of her body in pastel colours.
