Summer season brings more jobs

The labour market is reviving, but not due to a change in production model or the emergence of sectors promising future stability; rather simply because it is hot. Good weather fills bar terraces, restaurants and hotels, meaning contract numbers soar. June saw 261,682 contracts signed in Catalonia, 15% more than last year. Almost 90% were temporary and 72.6% temporary and in the services sector. However, despite the dependence on tourism, the improvement in the labour market once again extends across business sectors, geographical boundaries and the most castigated groups, such as young people. The Minister for Business and Employment, Felip Puig, said yesterday that 80% of all new jobs in the state are in Catalonia, which shows that it “is clearly leading the Spanish recovery”.
