AI campaign for Indian women

More than 200,000 people have lent their support for an Amnesty International led campaign in support of two Indian women, aged 15 and 23 respectively, who have been sentence by a local tribal council to be raped by members of an aggrieved family and then paraded naked through their town as punishment for what is seen to be a crime, committed by an elder brother, who eloped with a woman from a different cast. The women
are from a family belonging to the Dalit, or Untouchable cast, who may have no contact with a superior cast. The family would also be banished from the town. India's cast system is illegal but in practise, many local issues are left in the hands of local tribal councils. AI has asked the Indian justice system and government to intervene in the matter.
