Andorra, Catalan's backdoor to Europe
On July 22, 1993, Catalan finally became an officially recognised language, when Andorra was admitted to the United Nations. Now, 25 years later, talks between Andorra and the EU are progressing which will almost certainly lead to a Free Association agreement with the European Union, and Catalan may well find its way into Europe, despite previous vetoes by France and Spain. A lot will depend, on how far Anorra is willing to push the language question as the main focus of the talks are to allow our Pyrenean neighbours free trade and other economic benefits. Even if Catalan is officially recognised, it is also still unclear as to what extent this would benefit other Catalan speakers from different areas.
