Montserrat boy choir gears up for US tour

Montserrat’s escolans, the prestigious boy choir, have been rehearsing twice a day in preparation for their US tour that begins on June 26. With a mix of nerves and excitement, the choir’s visit will be its second to America, although this time the boys will perform on both coasts. One of the highlights will be a performance commemorating John F. Kennedy’s centenary, at which they will perform a piece in Catalan especially prepared for the occasion. The Escolania de Montserrat prefect, Sergi d’Assís, said the trip will be a good opportunity to “export popular Catalan culture.”

Pau Jorba is 14 and the US trip will be his last, as he finishes studying at the Escolania this year. “I am very happy, but also sad because I have to leave and I have spent a number of years here,” he said. What’s more, the schoolboy was ill in 2014 when the choir made its first trip to the US, which makes this tour especially important.
