Sánchez and Rivera join forces over O-1

With the failed attempt to reach an understanding that would oust Mariano Rajoy just one year ago still fresh in mind, the recently re-elected Secretary General of Spain’s Socialist party and the leader of Ciutadans, Albert Rivera, now in league with Rajoy, yesterday met to discus questions of interest and establish common ground. The meeting saw the two leaders in agreement in their opposition to the October 1 referendum in Catalonia and they also agreed to the necessity of constitutional reform, in fact laying down a timetable to begin the process after the summer parliamentary break. The reform aims at a renovation of Spain’s political system, stronger measures against corruption and the tabling of a new electoral law which has not been updated since the return of democracy. Rivera stated that this understanding with the PSOE does not conflict with C’s support for the PP.
