Creating a fresh identity

The 29th edition of the Festival Altaveu de Sant Boi de Llobregat is taking a new and unique direction under the leadership of the journalist Jordi Turtós

September 8, 9 and 10 see the 29th edition of Sant Boi de Llobregat’s Festival Altaveu and the organizers have decided on a makeover. For a start-off, they have signed veteran music journalist Jordi Turtós, who has taken over the musical direction. As the head of communication Laia Bonet explained, “we have initiated a process of redefining the festival.” She believes the festival is committed “to bringing to the public a relevant promotion of the town’s culture, in our case, music, seeking a balance between a line up of top names along with other local ones that deserve to be known.”

Jordi Turtós admits that “there is presently a saturation of festivals and we wanted to look for uniqueness, to avoid scheduling the same programme as everywhere else.” It is a clear commitment “to being a festival of discoveries, presenting consolidated performers next to new voices.”

With a budget of €180,000 (€121,500 from the city council and the rest from sponsors, grants, tickets and operation of the bar), Altaveu has three main venues, the plaça de l’Ajuntament (with free concerts), the gardens of the Ateneo Santboià (tickets €6) and Cal Ninyo (tickets at €8 include access to the Ateneo).

Concerts range from US group The Flamin’ Groovies (EUA) and Madrid’s Los Enemigos to Kadhja Bonet, and US vistor OMNI, reminiscent of groups like Television, Wire and Devo. Popular Catalan appearances are programmed which will include the duet Marina Arnal & Marc Bagés, Joana Gomila Folk Souvenir, and jazz from Marco Mezquida Trio, who Jordi Turtós says is “better than Keith Jarrett.”
