Authorities firm over return of artworks

The Catalan government will not today present its plan on transferring the 44 remaining artworks to the Sijena monastery that are still in the Museum of Lleida. A Huesca court ruled that the government’s plan for the transfer had to be submitted by July 25, with the artifacts supposed to be back in their original home by July 31.

The cultural sector in Catalonia has called for firmness from the authorities over the issue of the artworks, and it seems it is getting it. The issue of the Sijena artworks has caused a controversial rift between Catalonia and Aragon, with the monastery demanding their return and the Catalan authorities insisting the pieces in Lleida are part of a collection and therefore protected by Catalan law.
