“Estiu 1993”, a trumph of humility
Catalan cinema began its search for international recognition in ernest in 2010 and arguably the first to make base was Agustí Villaronga’s Pà negre. Now it is the turn of Carla Símon’s first film, Estiu 1993, which has already won international prizes in Berlin, Buenos Aires and Odessa, and widespread acceptance here at home. A film atypical of the road to success, a low budget first film and also, directed by a woman, it looks to be a strong candidate in the Gaudi and Goya awards this years, so much so that it has been nominated by Spain’s film academy as a candidate for the Oscars in 2018. The simplicity, sincerity and sensitivity of the film leave audiences believing they have witnessed a small miracle.
