A bitter victory for Angela Merkel
The Germans yesterday entered a new political cycle, ending the previous coalition of the CDU and the SPD and ushering into the Bundstag, for the first time since the end of World War II, a party on the far-right. The Alternative for Germany (AFD), very critical of immigration and Islam, threatens to complicate Angela Merkel’s 4th mandate and establish a debate so far avoided, focusing on issues of identity. In addition to the extremists, the liberal FDP party returns to the parliament. Merkel lost seats, but with her 33.2% of the vote was still well ahead of the SPD at 20.9%, worsening the crisis the socialists have suffered continuously since 2005 and with a resounding defeat for its leader, Martin Schulz.
