Opposition’s uphill battle in Venezuela
After nearly five months of daily demonstrations and repression that left 133 dead, the alliance of the Movement for Democratic Unity (MUD) has left the street to face a democratic test of uncertain outcome. President Nicolas Maduro called regional elections for Sunday, presenting MUD with a dilemma: either participate and give legitimacy to a government that it calls a dictatorship or present no candidates and further erode their international image. In recent elections the opposition has gained ground, only to see the government pull the rug from under them by changing the rules of the game, although this time things might not be so easy for Maduro. There are already claims of electoral irregularities.
