China announces beginning of “new era”

With a three and a half hour speech, one of the longest on record, President Xi Jinping sent an optimistic yet cautious message in the opening of the 19th Congress of the Communist Party of China (CPC) while simultaneously proclaiming the start of a “new era” for China and for the communist formation. Xi confirmed that economic reforms will continue and reminded the delegates that the Asian giant has established itself as the 2nd largest economy in the world. However, he also warned of the importance of the historical moment. “The internal and foreign situation is going through profound changes.” The president claimed that prospects are bright but the country faces serious challenges.

The congress will see Xi consolidate his power to an extent equalled only by Deng Xiaoping as the political cadre of the CPC have been wary of allowing one leader to gain too much power.

The president announced various stages in China’s new ear. The first will be to modernise the armed forces with emphasis to be placed on the country’s navy. With1.4 million corrupt officials already punished, efforts will continue to clean up the administration at all levels and party and government organs will be redesigned. Xi also offered an outstretched hand to Taiwan.
