Daughter of Putin aid vies for presidency

The candidature of television star Ksènia Sobtxak, known as Russias’s Paris Hilton, has added a spark to the Russian presidential elections to be held next March despite bringing division to the opposition. Sobtxak is popular on the screen and in the media and is outspoken in her criticism of Russian President Vladimir Putin. With a degree in international relations, the candidate is daughter of Putin mentor Anatoli Sobtxak from his time in the Saint Petersburg council. Analysts see her candidature as a “desire to create interest in the elections,” creating an alternative to the opposition leader Alexei Navalni. Many agree that her decision can only be explained as coming with the blessing of the Kremlin.
