Controversial electoral law in Italy

In the last 20 years, Italy has had three different electoral laws and yesterday the Italian Senate approved the 4th, a controversial law that responds to the interests of the parties that proposed it but that satisfies few and aggravates the endemic problem of the country’s ungovernability.

The law is the result of an agreement between Matteo Renzi and Silvio Berlusconi and is designed so that the Democratic Party (PD) and Forza Italia (FI) can look to the next elections, scheduled for next spring in the best possible conditions as it does not favour the most voted party. The country’s extremely fragmented left wing parties are the biggest losers, especially Bepe Grilllo’s Five Star Movement.
