Unionists march to topple the Republic

Some 300,000 people (1.3 million according to organisers) marched through Barcelona’s streets yesterday in a demonstration organised by Societat Civil Catalana. The march was called to demonstrate the unity of Catalonia with Spain and to protest the establishment of the Catalan Republic. The protest had the support of the Partit Popular, Ciutadans and for the first time, the PSC. Speakers, among them Paco Frutos, Josep Borrell and Josep Piqué, called for those present to vote massively in the December 21 elections . Demonstrators shouted chants calling for the imprisonment of Carles Puigdemont, and handed out leaflets criticising TV3, accusing the public broadcasting entity of “manipulation”.
