Refugees return to the Calais “Jungle”

On October 24, 2016, as 7,400 asylum seekers, waited with suitcases and backpacks at the entrance of the “jungle” for French social service workers to distribute them to shelters in the rest of France. Meanwhile, the bulldozers began to demolish the camp outside Calais. 42% of them gained asylum, 46% are still waiting. One year later, refugees are drifting back to the zone and a new camp is growing alongside the remains of the one which was destroyed. In this wasteland beside the port around 700 asylum seekers, Afghans, Eritreans and Sudanese, many who lived here before have returned only to survive in “conditions that are worse than in the old camp” says Olivia of the association Vie Active.
