Irish border question complicates Brexit

The EU commissioner for Rural and Agricultural Development, Phil Hogan (Eire), has warned that the Brexit negotiations should ensure the continuing open border between the Irish Republic and Northern Ireland, or at least a customs union, despite the final commercial agreement reached with the UK and the EU. Dublin has threatened to veto any final agreement that would include a “hard border” while the EU is firm in its stance that negotiations into the question of commerce will not begin until the Brexit agreement is formalised. The EU also sees the border question as part of that agreement. Eire is concerned a hard border would have a negative impact on employment in the Republic.
