Latin America faces the ballot box in 2018

Latin America faces an intensive election year in 2018. Six countries will see a change of president, including the two largest: Brazil and Mexico. Venezuela will decide the fate of Nicholas Maduro, an authoritarian who seeks reelection with the transparency of the elections in doubt. There will be elections in Colombia, where the FARC will face electors for the first time but without a presidential candidate. Elections are also to be held in Paraguay and Costa Rica. In some of these countries there could be clear ideological swings and in the case of Brazil, Luiz Inacio Lula will return to the front line of politics. In Cuba, the resignation of Raül Castro will mean the end to 59 years of the dominance of the Castro family.
