Rail line at Sant Feliu to finally go underground

For almost 40 years the people of Sant Feliu have clamoured for Spain’s railway server Renfe, to end the division of the city by the railway line and place it below ground. It is not only the fact that the line divides the city right down the middle, but more importantly that 30 people have been killed on the level crossing over the years.

The announcement was made yesterday by the Public Works Minister, Iñigo de la Serna, who said that the excavation works will start next year. He did so accompanied by the President of Adif, Juan Bravo, the delegate of the state government in Catalonia, Enric Millo, and the mayor of Sant Feliu, Jordi San José, as well as three previous mayors, which according to San José served to illustrate the long-standing vindication of the municipality.

The project, which was originally designed in 2010, has been updated and complies with all environmental standards will see 1,545 metres of railway lines buried, but will involve works affecting over three kilometres of the main line all of which pass through the municipality. The minister said that the project is complicated as it must take into account the volume of rail traffic which must be diverted as well as the need to build a temporary station to cover passenger needs.
