Pope proposes international statute for Jerusalem

The Pope yesterday proposed a special status that preserves the vocation of a “place of peace” for Jerusalem with international guarantees in a letter addressed to the Imam of the Al Azhar Islamic University in Cairo yesterday. The Holy Father, who is on tour in South America said in the letter that authorities “should work to try to prevent any new spiral of tension and instead for justice, harmony and security to prevail, for the people of this sacred land, as there is an urgent need to restore dialogue between the Palestinians and Israelis to find a negotiated peace.”
