A splendid summer

As it was expected, Carla Simon’s film Estiu 1993, took the main prizes in the 10th edition of the Catalan academy’s Gaudi Awards last night, not in terms of the number of statuettes it won -five of its 14 nominations - but for the relevance of the prizes it did win. Incerta glòria, by Agustí Villaronga, won eight, including Best Actress (Nuria Prims) and Best Supporting Actor (Oriol Pla).

Estiu 1993 -an independent and intimate low-budget production, won awards for Best Film, Best Director, Best Screenplay, Best supporting actress (Bruna Cusí) and Best Scenography (Anna Pfaff). Carlos Marqués-Marcet repeated his win in the Best non-Catalan Language film, Tierra firme. As if mirroring the paradigm shift in the film industry in the last few years, 11 of the 22 awards went to women.
