Almost 78% of female inmates are mothers
Almost 78% of women in prison in Catalonia are mothers with an average of 2.3 children (outside prison the average birth rate is 1.6). Most are between 18 and 40 and are mostly Spanish. Some 36% of inmates are foreign. Almost half (48%) are single mothers. These are some of the figures in a report on the female prison population by the Observatori Social i Econòmic de la Justícia.
