Parliament sidelines Cs

Ciutadans only wins the support of the PP in its call for the resignation of the Speaker, Roger Torrent; the party shows no signs of changing its message

Something is beginning to move on the Catalan parliamentary scene, but for Ciutadans it seems they have not yet noticed. Yesterday’s parliamentary plenary session evidenced the intransigence of the party in the continued bitter attacks on the process and pro-independence parties, which only attracted the support of the three members of the PP in its motion calling for the resignation of the Speaker of the House because of his “ confrontational attitude and the institutional deadlock.”

The vote on the resolution meant that for the first time this term, and for some time beforehand, the votes of the members of the PSC and the Comuns aligned with the three separatist groups to form a strong majority of 92 MPs voting against the proposal.

The vote is not the only sign of the party’s unflinching attitude. Having been the most voted party in the December elections, Arrimadas has not once proposed that her party should form a government or look for associates which could lead to unblocking the present impasse. In contrast, both Miquel Iceta (PSC) and Xavier Domènech (Comuns) did put forward proposals aimed at establishing a government of concentration regardless of political ideology to at least allow the formation of an executive. Not even that was enough to summon the slightest deviation from the script.

Arrimadas’ intervention also provoked objections for the pro-independence parties for her criticism of MPs currently in prison or under threat of extradition. JuntsXCat MP Marta Madrenas accused her of denying the reality of the repression that the independence parties are subject to.
