Seat’s 25 years in Martorell

On February 22, 1993 Seat opened the modernised facilities in Martorell and extended its production capacity which the car company had until then in the Zona Franca at a cost of 244.5 billion pesetas (€1.5 billion) with construction of the new plant taking 34 months. From 1953 production had been 30 kilometers away, and although it may not seem a great distance, for the company it was a quantum leap.

The car manufacturer now has a total area of 2.8 million square meters, with the plant taking up as much as 400 football fields placed one beside the other and employs more than 12,000 direct workers. With 21% of women in the workforce, Seat is proud that it stands above the Spanish average of 11%.

Currently, Seat produces about 2,300 vehicles per day, which represents a yield of 95% of the capacity of the plant, representing a new car every 30 seconds. Data from the 2017, a record year, confirm this: with more than 455,000 vehicles manufactured since 2009, production has grown more than 50%. The plant is one of the largest producers in Europe.

For the CEO of the company, Luca de Meo, “to speak of Martorell is to speak of progress and growth.” Indeed, Seat is preparing for the new requirements and the next industrial revolution, that of 4.0, based on intelligent, digitised and connected production . The company already uses virtual reality, collaborative robots, augmented reality and 3D printing.
