US pays homage to Martin Luther King

A bell that tolled at 6:01 pm local time in Memphis, sounded like the bullet that pierced the throat of Martin Luther King, the Afro-American civil rights leader and activist who was murdered 50 years ago. Memphis became a place of pilgrimage for all those who, half a century later, still venerate the figure of Luther King, an icon crucial to the advancement of the rights of African Americans and minorities in the US, who have seen they must fight a president known for his xenophobia and racist leanings. The Luther King memorial drew an insignificant mention from the US leader. In Memphis, King’s three daughters attended the official ceremony, along with a granddaughter, active in the anti-arms lobby.
