Parliament Vs Llarena

Torrent postpones nomination following refusal by Llarena to allow the candidate to attend the session and will file complaint against the judge

The fourth attempt blocked as well. Speaker of the House Roger Torrent, yesterday postponed the plenary session of the nomination of Jordi Sànchez after the decision by Supreme Court judge Pablo Llarena to foil his candidacy as President of the Generalitat by rejecting his request to attend the session or to take part by videoconference. The House Committee will meet this morning, according to parliamentary sources, and Torrent will propose that the chamber files a complaint against the judge for perverting the course of justice. If filed, such a case would be heard before the Supreme Court.

JxCat, ERC and the CUP have agreed on the need to give a joint response to what they consider a violation of the precautionary measures issued by the Human Rights Committee of the UN. Ciutadans consider the proposal to be “illegal”.

While that may go ahead, ERC have called for “an effective” government to be formed as quickly as possible and put an end to Article 155. However, JxCat see no need to adhere to the April 23 agreement it had with the Republicans now. Rather, the group adheres to the Puigdemont line that there is ample time and opportunity to string out the naming of an alternative candidate before the May 22 deadline.

Meanwhile Carles Puigdemont and Artur Mas met yesterday in Berlin for the first time following Puigemont’s release from prison. A number of members of JxCat still insist on his eventual nomination but that would require Parliament to pass a law which would allow the investiture outside Parliament, a move which ERC sees as too much of a risk.
