Attempt to avert US-China trade war stalls

China and the US ended two days of negotiations in Beijing with no concrete agreement to avoid a trade war between the two economic powers. The delegations were only able to agree on a “working mechanism” and accept that there are “major differences” between Beijing and Washington, despite being aware that “a strong business relationship is crucial for both countries,” and therefore have promised to resolve differences “through dialogue.” The lack of progress was of no surprise to observers.
