SPAIN CORRUPTION

Spanish Treasury chief under investigation for corruption

The Spanish Secretary of State for the Treasury, José Enrique Fernández de Moya, has been summoned to declare in a Jaén court after being investigated for the crimes of perversion of justice, embezzlement of public funds and misrepresentation, over tenders when he was Mayor of the Andalusian city.

According to court sources, the judicial investigation began as a result of a complaint presented by the City of Jaen’s municipal socialist group in December 2017. Four other people are being investigated in the case, and have been summoned to declare on June 5.

The alleged crimes are linked to Fernández de Moya’s time as mayor of Jaén between June 2011 and November 2015, when, against the recommendations of the inspector’s reports, he allegedly ordered several payments to the company Matinsreg, which was in charge of the maintenance for the city’s ornamental fountains.

The accusation states that a large number of unfulfilled work hours were falsely billed, hours that it would have been impossible for the company’s staff to carry out, and which cost the City Council more than €3.6 million.

The Unidos Podemos MP and leader of Izquierda Unida, Alberto Garzón, yesterday called for Fernández de Moya’s resignation.
