Conte’s last ditch effort to form government fails

Italy’s designate prime minister Giuseppe Conte has informed President Sergio Mattarella that he has failed in his attempt to form a government and will not make further attempts. The difficulty arose in the nomination of a Eurosceptic as minister of the economy, Paolo Savona. The far-right Lega leader Matteo Salvini said the only option now was to hold another election.
