Mayor of Figueres claims complaint has political basis

The mayor of Figueres, Marta Felip, yesterday stressed that the complaint against her in relation to the 1-O referendum is political, before revealing that the complainant is Jaume Farrerons, the leading candidate for the Intra party in the Figueres local elections of 2015. “This is a political case and I hope that the judge takes that into account,” she said before the media outside the court in Figueres, where she is accused of disobedience in relation to 1-O.

Felip received support from many political parties in the city and the region, including the CUP, ERC and PDeCAT, as well as from various mayors and Catalan MPs.

Among the hundred or so people gathered at the entrance to the courts were several of her relatives. Felip was visibly moved on several occasions by the support she had received from the attending crowd. Finally, she headed into court to declare, accompanied by her lawyer, Joan Ramon Puig Pellicer, the lawyer who defended the mayor of Roses, Montse Mindan.

Felip’s declaration took over half an hour, but she only responded to questions from her lawyer and refused to answer questions from the prosecutor and judge. Before entering, Felip had declared that she was just another citizen in the referendum on October 1 and had played no other role in it.
