A very uneasy partnership

Torra appeals to the spirit of disobedience of 1-O and the declaration of independence; ERC urges partners to move ahead and shun rhetoric

The loss of the parliamentary majority by the independence parties has spawned distrust between Junts per Catalunya and ERC after the Republicans aligned with the PSC to vote in committee to refuse voting by Carles Puigdemont, Jordi Sànchez, Jordi Turull and Josep Rull. That was made evident in question time in the parliament yesterday, following the brawl between the two groups that support the executive. Quim Torra was at pains to promote unity so that the legislature does not fall apart, and did so by appealing to the “spirit of disobedience” of 1-O, a spirit that brought together all sectors within the independence movement. The President of the Generalitat also vindicated the political declaration of independence of the 27-S, which no longer enjoys the same quorum.

ERC spokesperson Sergi Sabrià agreed that the goals shared with JxCat (independence, defense of the political prisoners and exiles) “are stronger than tactical differences,” but he also defended: “goals go beyond the proclamations of dignity,” a message clearly aimed at JxCat.

Albert Batet, speaking for JxCat made no reference to specific grievances with ERC, but together with Torra, emphasised that facing any attacks against independence, the best reaction is unity.

However, it is quite obvious that there is an abyss between the two parties that form the government, with strategic differences putting in doubt the legislature lasting at least until the sentences from the trial against the accused in the October 1 case are handed down. As well, the problem remains and will be made evident every time the independence parties lose a vote in the house.
