Government wants Sánchez offer

Catalan executive hopes to gain favour with CUP through Civic Forum and Council of Republic initiatives

The Catalan JxCat and ERC government has warned Pedro Sánchez’ executive over not having taken any steps in its commitment to seek a political solution to the Catalan conflict and maintains that it will not negotiate the state budget if no political proposal is put on the table.

Announcing this ultimatum by President Torra if no political offer is forthcoming, the Minister of the Presidency and Catalan government spokesperson, Elsa Artadi, said yesterday that the situation “has a lot to do with the state budget. There is no offer on the table. There is no movement and we remain where we were, there is no progress in the possibilities to negotiate.”

Artadi warned that something more than a political gesture is required: “We are not waiting for a gesture... we are waiting for a political offer. That they tell us where they are and what they want to do with the situation of repression and to look for a political solution.”

The government spokesperson then denied that Pablo Iglesias’ prison visit to ERC leader, Oriol Junqueras, and JxCat members Jordi Sànchez, Jordi Turull and Josep Rull, as well as the long telephone conversation with Carles Puigdemont had anything to do with the budget. Artadi argued that the aim of these meetings was to share a diagnosis of “the current abnormal situation” and the need to build bridges and “strengthen contact and dialogue between different interlocutors.”

On the other hand, the Catalan executive accepted that the CUP had refused to participate in the initiatives of the Council of the Republic and the Civic and Social Forum for the Constituent Debate, although Artadi believes it will be possible to seduce them when these bodies become a reality.
