Prison or exile: the lives of all involved turned upside down

The tension experienced during the adoption of the referendum law, the threats, police brutality, the victory of the yes vote in spite of everything, the vertiginous hours until deciding whether elections would be called or a unilateral declaration of independence made and, finally, the solemn declaration “We constitute the Catalan Republic as an independent and sovereign state”. If the months leading up to that moment were frenetic, then life following that day would never be the same.

The sudden sacking of Carles Puigdemont and his government , the application of 155, the judicial offensive ... None of the protagonists of October 27 one year ago are in the same place. Their lives have taken a 180 degree turn.

The photograph taken on the steps of Parliament can not be repeated: President Carles Puigdemont is exiled in Brussels from where he directs the Casa de la República, and Toni Comín, Clara Ponsatí, Lluís Puig, Meritxell Serret, and Marta Rovira and Anna Gabriel are also far from home. They know where they would be if they had not left. Former Vice President Oriol Junqueras, Jordi Turull, Josep Rull, Raül Romeva, Joaquim Forn and Dolors Bassa are imprisoned along with Carme Forcadell and the leaders of the ANC and Òmnium Cultural, Jordi Sànchez and Jordi Cuixart.
