Nine dead in Italy due to strong winds and rain

The storms bringing torrential rains and strong winds to Italy have left nine people dead in different parts of the country, mostly due to falling trees. Several regions remained on alert yesterday, with Lombardy, Veneto, Friuli-Venice Júlia, Liguria and Trentino-Südtirol (north), and Abruzzo (centre) on red alert and much of the rest of the peninsula and Sicily on orange. While schools remained closed in many cities, the tide rose to 156 centimetres above sea level in Venice and the city was flooded.
