POINT MADE
No easy way out
At yesterday’s Podemos party event, the only person who dared utter the words “political prisoners” was Pablo Iglesias. Everyone else showed their skills in linguistic subterfuge and took winding semantic paths to avoid the term, at times referring only to “people currently in jail.” I know you don’t have to wear a yellow ribbon to decry the unjust imprisonment of the pro-independence leaders, and that at other times Ada Colau has spoken the two words together, but this attempt to balance solidarity with the prisoners, whilst begging for the votes of “the Catalan right”is weak, and borders on dehumanization. It’s as if Iglesias expected his visit to Lledoners prison to produce a “magic bullet” solution..
