Together in love, life and art

“L’equilibri possible” at the Montserrat Museum explores the shared (and individual) worlds of Albert Ràfols Casamada (1923-2009) and Maria Girona (1923-2015) who, from their meeting in 1945 onwards shared married life, friends, cultural tastes, troubles, and of course their profession. This exhibition digs deeper into the worlds of these artists than ever before, it pays particular attention to Maria Girona who is often somewhat eclipsed by Casamada’s fame. “We must interpret her next to him, but never beneath him, “said the exhibition commissioner Bernat Puigdollers. Many will be surprised to know that in the 40s and 50s the couple survived on Maria Girona’s painting as Ràfol’s work was not well liked. Indeed, it was only from the 60s onwards, with the rise of informalism, that the artists’ fortunes were reversed, and this happened for a very simple reason: Maria Girona did not cross over into the realm of the abstract.
