Velázquez exhibition opens in CaixaForum
A major exhibition on Spanish painter, Diego Rodríguez de Silva Velázquez, has opened at Barcelona’s CaixaForum, in conjunction with the Prado National Gallery in Madrid. ’Velázquez and the Golden Age’, which runs until March 3, has seven “masterpieces” by the court artist, alongside another 52 by his contemporaries.
In an exhibition that shows off Velázquez’s “versatility” and international influence, say the organisers, the works are displayed by theme, relating Velázquez’s work to that of other artists, such as Titian, Rubens, Ribera, El Greco, Zurbarán, Murillo, Giordano, Claude Lorrain, Jan Brueghel the Elder, Antonio Moro, Stanzione, Guido Reni and Van Dyck.
The Prado’s rules limit the number of works it can loan out to seven, something that rarely happens, says Prado head, Miguel Falomir, who adds that the reason for the move is that the exhibition coincides with the Prado’s bicentenary celebration.
