Slaughter at meeting of Islamic scholars in Kabul

At least 40 people died yesterday and another sixty were injured by an explosion at a meeting of Islamic scholars being held to celebrate the anniversary of the birth of the Prophet Muhammad in Kabul (Afghanistan). The explosion took place at 6 p.m. local time, when a suicide bomber set off explosives in a room where hundreds of scholars were reciting verses from the Koran. At the time of writing, neither the Taliban nor the regional branch of the Islamic State had claimed responsibility for the attack.
