Nissan ready to lay off up to 500, say unions

Vehicle manufacturer Nissan is looking at reducing staff numbers in its Barcelona plant by up to 500 people. The unions say the potential reduction comes after the company lowered production. Union representatives say the company informed them of the “need to reduce staff levels”, although the job losses would be “non-traumatic”, shorthand for voluntary redundancies and early retirements. No talks with the unions on conditions have taken place, but Nissan has called a news conference for Tuesday.
