The Christmas light debate

Ada Colau had warned in her election campaign that a new council would invoke policies which would make the Catalan capital more sustainable and one area that would feel the impact would be the Christmas shopping campaign. Barcelona's Christmas lights, which were due to be shining brightly on November 21, would have to wait until December 1 under new council regulations. Unhappy with the change, the city's shopkeepers voiced their objections and a compromise was reached which would see the city lit up on November 27, to coincide with the Black Friday sales. Colau has said that next year, council and commerce would debate the issue further but she is adamant that she wants to see the city move towards sustainable policies and to save the ratepayer considerable expense.
