Leading eye doctor Joaquim Barraquer dies

He did his first cataract surgery when he was 13 and ophthalmology became his life. Joaquim Barraquer, son of professor Ignasi Barraquer, founder of the clinic that bears his name, died at home yesterday aged 89. With a lifetime of eye surgery behind him, Barraquer was named ophthalmologist of the millennium in an international congress in 2000. Three years later he sold an exclusive Mercedes car of his father's and set up a foundation providing eye surgery to the poor in third world countries.
