Loving the Andes

Carles Pérez Padró He is from Molins de Rei, and works as a personal trainer in Lima, Peru. He loves the ancient cultures of the Andes, and travels a lot.
Why did you leave Catalonia?
One of my dream destinations in the world since I was a child was Machu Picchu. It always seemed magical to me. So I came here as a tourist... and I'm still here!
Why did you choose Lima?
A friend of mine who has lived here since 1995 offered me a job for a couple of months. I liked the experience, so I decided to stay.

How long have you lived there?
Since 2009.
Are you happy with the job opportunities you found in your adopted country?
Well, it is a very different work environment, but once you get it, it is not difficult to find a fair job.
What do you think is the best thing about living there?
The historical background, the indigenous culture that remains under the surface of the Spanish heritage, and the food. The food is unbelievable.
What would you most like to change?
Well, people here never arrive on time, they are always late. I can't get used to it!
What do you miss most from home?
My mum's fricandó. Definitely.
What do you take with you as a present from your new home when you go back to your own country?
Some ponchos. My friends and family love them!
What do you consider the highlights for any brief visit for the first time?
After you visit the Andes, there are the small villages there and, of course, Machu Picchu. Get lost in the historical old quarter of Lima. You'll love it!
