Food waste: top of the list for 2017

Another year and we devote the first issue of 2017 to a problem that affects everyone, and that we should all add to our list of New Year's resolutions. Wasting food is an alarming problem. Recent studies show that every year people in Catalonia throw away about 40 kilos of food each, which means about 7% of what we buy ends up in the bin. At the same time, 20% of the population is at risk of food insecurity. Yet, the total amount of food waste generated each year is enough to feed the nearly one billion hungry people in the world. Fortunately, there is increasing awareness of the issue, and there are food saving projects underway all over the country (see Irene Casellas' feature on pages 20-29). We would like you, the readers, to share your experiences with us: How much food do you waste? What do you do to avoid wasting food? Send us your thoughts and tips on Facebook, Twitter or by email. Also, don't miss our feature about YouTubers, or the interviews with Antoni Aguilera, President of the Catalan Red Cross, and Giles Auckland-Lewis, director of the Institute of the Arts Barcelona. Enjoy the read and all the very best for the New Year!
