Controversial Bishop José María Setién dies

The Emeritus Bishop San Sebastián José María Setién died yesterday at the age of 90 in the Guipuzcoan capital, as the result of a stroke. Appointed Bishop of San Sebastián in 1972, a position he held until 2000, he never wavered from his position in favour of the dialogue with ETA and the right of self-determination in the Basque Country, for which he was criticised by the Spanish Episcopal Conference and the unionist sectors in the political sphere. Since his retirement Setién also withdrew from public life.
