Terror attack at Catalan police station

A man yesterday attacked a Mossos d’Esquadra police station, just two days after the first anniversary of the Jhadist attacks in Barcelona and Cambrils. The 29-year-old, of Algerian origin, whose documentation revealed his name to be Abdelouahab Taib, was shot dead by a police officer inside the Cornellà de Llobregat station yesterday.

“The man, who was carrying a large knife, hurled himself at the officer with homicidal intent and the agent shot him out of fear for his physical well-being,” said Mossos senior commissioner Rafel Comes in a statement. He added that the event was being investigated as a “terrorist attack”, and that the Mossos had invited the Spanish police and Civil Guard to participate in the investigation.

According to the commissioner, it was 5.53 a.m. when the man buzzed the police station intercom and “asked to make an enquiry.” The agent emerged to attend to him, at which point the suspect “jumped at him” with a large knife and “cried Allah and something else that the agent did not understand.”

The attacker was a resident of Cornellà, whose flat was two minutes from the police station. The Mossos have asked the state security forces and intelligence service if he had any previous connections with terrorism.
