Head of Interpol missing after trip to China

French police are investigating the apparent disappearance of Meng Hongwei, the head of Interpol. His wife reported him missing after a trip to China in late September. Meng served as Chinese Vice Minister of Public Security before he succeeded French policewoman Mireille Ballestrazzi as head of Interpol in 2016. Amnesty International expressed concerns at that time that with Meng’s past in state security, he could use Interpol sources to track down wanted dissidents on behalf of the Chinese authorities.
