Torra demands justice for Lluís Companys

The president of the Generalitat, Quim Torra, yesterday demanded that Spain apologise for the murder of Lluís Companys, the only democratically elected president in Europe to have faced a firing squad. Torra, speaking at the memorial dedicated to the man who was executed 78 years ago, lamented that neither the monarchy nor any Spanish government has condemned the crime perpetrated by Franco’s regime.

The President also remarked that the government remained true to the republican “ideals of justice, fraternity and equality” and that he was prepared to :“fight to the end, with all the consequences.” He also sent a message to Spain’s prime minister, Perdo Sánchez, asking that the summary trial against Companys be overturned.

Speaking later from Terròs, the hometown of Companys, Torra warned: “What is at stake is the collective dignity of our country. At some point we will have to say enough, and that moment is about to arrive.”

In answer, the PSC’s secretary general, Miquel Iceta, used the figure of the martyr to say that “the commemoration of the 78th anniversary of the murder of President Lluís Companys is a fact that relates to history and serves as a reason for reflection on what are the best ways to prepare the future of the country.”
