Wine route through... DO Terra Alta

In the morning:

Pinell de Brai cooperative (Pinell de Brai, Tarragona)

The Pinell de Brai cooperative is a beautiful modernist winery of great architectural interest that was created by Cèsar Martinell, a disciple of famous architect Antoni Gaudí. Built in 1922, the building is also the town’s main tourist attraction, not only thanks to its architectural value but also because it features iconic decorations from the time, such as a 40-metre ceramic frieze by Noucentist artist, Xavier Nogués.

There is a warehouse in the winery that is not only dedicated to the production of wine, but is also where extra virgin olive oil is produced from olives cultivated by the cooperative, such as the Modernista and Mill·lenari brands.

The vineyards are located in Pinell de Brai and Gandesa, where white and red varieties of Grenache, Cabernet Sauvignon, Macabeu, Sirah, Carignan, Muscat and Tempranillo are grown to produce the wines: Indià, Modernista, Gamberro and Gamberrillo.

In addition to discovering the different production areas and the most iconic corners of the historic building, visitors can taste the wines and oils, buy them in the shop, and even eat the winery’s own restaurant.

For lunch:
Catedral del Vi (Pinell del Brai)

This business project goes back to 2010, and is a result of the passion for cooking and serving food of the brothers Joaquim and Fran López, chefs of the Villa Retiro and Xerta restaurants, each of which has a Michelin star. The Catedral del Vi restaurant is located in the old olive hall, located in the left nave of the building. Its facilities offer the possibility of celebrating different events in a unique environment beneath the historic parabolic arches that support the main naves. Chef Fran López’s menu is based on Mediterranean cuisine and local fresh produce, with a focus on seasonal cuisine. The restaurant offers a daily set menu and a wine list based exclusively on wines from the Terra Alta designation of origin.
