Wine route through La Terra del Cava

In the morning:

Forns Raventós (Santa Fe del Penedès)

The winery’s founder, Albert Forns Raventós, was from a family of grape farmers who also sold wine as far back as 1836, according to family documents. In 1954, Albert gave up the wine trade to fully devote himself to making cava, which he did until 1982. That was when his daughter Maria Rosa Forns and her husband Jordi Salvany took over the family tradition. Today the third generation has taken over the family legacy of making high quality cava.

The winery is located in the middle of Santa Fe del Penedès, eight metres underground, providing an ideal temperature for cava to mature in the bottle.

However, the work of producing the cava begins above ground in the vineyards, where the firm uses methods that are both efficient and respectful of the environment. The cava is made only with freshly pressed must (grape juice), which is needed to attain the required quality.

The firm has stayed loyal to the traditional blends that use varieties of grape native to the Penedès region: macabeu, xarel·lo and parellada. They also produce singular wines using only the pinot noir variety.

The different cavas produced by Forns Raventós are: FORNS RAVENTÓS: RESERVA FAMILIAR, FORNS RAVENTÓS: RESERVA, AMILIAR MAGNUM, ROSA DE FORNS RAVENTÓS, ORTUS DE FORNS RAVENTOS, ALBERT FORNS GRAN RESERVA.

For lunch:
Sumoll (La Granada)

The Sumoll restaurant is located in a traditional farmhouse that is the ideal setting for an establishment devoted to Catalan cuisine, and is in the heart of Penedès, amid vineyards that belong to the restaurant’s owners.

The farmhouse is a modernist-style building called Masia Gustems, and with its origins in the cultural explosion that took place in the noucentist Barcelona of the early 20th century, its design reflects tradition and modernity.

Sumoll offers high quality food made with local Penedès products. In the summer, diners can also take advantage of its wonderful terrace, “Club sumoll”. Since its renovation in 2003, Sumoll offers both an intimate dining experience and can also cater for groups.

The restaurant has a lunchtime set menu, two gourmet menus, and a range of dishes on its general menu. It opens from Sunday to Wednesday lunchtimes, and from Thursday to Saturday lunchtimes and evenings.
