Two die as light aircraft crashes into building in Badia del Vallès
The two occupants of a light aircraft died yesterday when the plane they were travelling in crashed into a building in Badia del Vallès, in Vallès Occidental. The crash happened as the plane was about to land at Sabadell airport, where it had taken off in the morning. Why it crashed into the building, which is next to a petrol station, on Cantàbric avenue, is as yet unknown.
According to the emergency services, the accident happened at 5.15pm. The plane crashed into the roof of the building without causing any structural damage. At first it was thought that only one of the occupants had died, although it was later confirmed that there were two victims.
The Catalan police have opened an investigation to discover the cause of the crash, with officers deployed at the petrol station in Badia del Vallès as well as Sabadell airport looking for information that might shed light on the cause of the accident.
In all, seven firefighter crews attended the scene, with the ladder of one fire engine used to support the plane and stop it falling. A large crane was then brought in to remove the plane from the building’s roof.
One witness, Sílvia, explained that she was in the petrol station at the time cleaning her car when she suddenly heard “a loud crash” and saw “smoke and stones falling to the ground”.
